Bechtel

Overview

Bechtel will hold 211 student beds, and includes singles, 4, 6, 8, and 12-bedroom suites. There are 2 faculties in residence, 6 RA apartments, and 1 RLC apartment. It will open on September 15, 2018. It should be noted that after Bechtel opens, previous House affiliated off-campus alleys, as well as Caltech-owned apartments, will no longer be available for undergraduates to live in.

COUCH

The COUCH (Committee on Undergraduate Caltech Housing) is currently in the process of drafting a proposal for who will reside in Bechtel. It was formed to give an undergraduate perspective on this process. There are 6 focus groups, each with 5-10 students and one leader, on the following topics:

  1. Themed Housing
  2. Unaffiliated Housing
  3. House-Affiliated Colonies
  4. Sophomore-priority Housing
  5. New Undergraduate House(s)
  6. All-Freshman Housing

A proposal was be submitted in December, with a final decision made with administrators on February 1st. The exact decision plan from Dr. Joe Shepherd can be found on the Student Affairs' website [here]. The original 100+ page report submitted by students is linked on the website - this includes the Polaris Plan consolidated by the COUCH and IHC, as well as individual subgroup reports.

More information from IHC and COUCH, including Tech articles, statistics, and individual reports will be included over time [here].
